Maybe he is 8? It may be sad Gin. Donft read. Ok?
-
Onii-Chan is sitting at the dinner table.
The maid enters the dining room and sets his food before him.
He frowns.
gDonft you like it,h She asks. She is smiling and her eyes reflect in the chandelier over the table.
He shakes his head.
gWhy?h
Onii-Chan looks out across the large nine person empty table.
He feels very alone.
Instead of answering her questions, he asks, gWhen are mom and dad coming home?h
gNot for another month and a half,h the maid replies.
gOh.h He picks up his spoon and dips it into his soup.
He drinks the soup from the spoon. His eyes reflect the light of the twenty-four light chandelier. It is a very grand piece with beautiful worked glass.
gThank you,h he says. gIt is very good.h His eyes are brimming.
The maid steps forward. She touches him on the head and smiles sadly.
She kneels down beside his chair.
gAre you okay?h she asks.
He looks at her. The tears become real in his eyes. But they do not drop.
gYes,h he replies choked.
She uncharacteristically wraps her arms around his small frame.
She says, gI am sorry. I am so sorry.h
Onii-Chan places his cheek against her arms. His tears begin. They stain her white blouse. He cries out.
He does not finish his soup this evening.
Her tears drop to the polished floor.
She stands in the doorway of his room.
gIs there anything I can get you?h
He shakes his head. She begins to turn away. At the sound of his voice, her face lightens.
Onii-Chan says, gMaybe my Pill-Pill? I left him downstairs on the couch? Could you bring pill-pill to me?h
She smiles. gI will be right back.h
She rushes down the stairs and grabs the baby blue pillow. It is tattered. Frayed at the edges, it has been his favorite thing, besides the computer, for all the years she has known him. She clutches pill-pill to her chest as she runs back up the stairs. She almost trips as she hits the landing. She straightens herself and walks swiftly down the hall.
She reenters his room.
gHere it is!h
He looks up. He has been crying again. His tear stained face reflects in the light of the single hallway lamp. His pillow is soaked.
Her throat chokes.
She crosses his wooden floored room and drops by his bedside.
gHere,h she says. She holds his little head up and places pill-pill under his temple.
gThank you.h
She strokes his forehead.
gGo to sleep, go to sleep,h she sings. gGo to sleep, my little baby.h
Tears drop from her eyes onto the wooden floor.
She stands. gWhen you wake. You will find, all the pretty little horses. Blacks and bays, dapples and grays, Coaches and six-a-little horses.h
She pauses. gHush-a-bye, donft you cry. Go to sleep little baby.h
She continues to sing and watches as he falls asleep.
She exits to the hall and wipes her eyes on her blouse. She adds her own stain to Onii-Chanfs.
-My mom sang that song to me when I was worried. I meant to post this later. But I could not think of anything else to add. So Ifll post it now. Please tear it apart or tell me what you like.
